Oliver: The Gentle Giant

The story about the Great Dane, Oliver, who was severely abused by his owner broke my heart.  How anyone could treat an animal this way is beyond my comprehension.  What's even more sad is Oliver's abuser, Michael Perillo, will only have to pay a fine for the damage he has done because he was charged with a misdemeanor.  A misdemeanor for punching his dog repeatedly in the face until his eye was swollen and blood was pouring out of his mouth (there were blood splatters all over the walls at his house).  A misdemeanor for duck taping his mouth shut so he couldn't eat or drink.  A misdemeanor for ignoring the severe skin condition that was eating away at him.  A misdemeanor for ignoring (and probably causing) the big gaping hole in his back leg.  Sickening, right?  If this was done to a human being, the perpetrator would spend at least 10 years in jail - at least.  Animals should be treated like people - they have feelings and emotions just like we do.  Why did this "man" get off so easy?  The legal system has to change.  In order for that to happen, people need to speak for these animals.  A couple ways you can do that is sign this petition to help make animal cruelty a felony in New York State;
or, attend Animal Advocacy Day on June 1st at the New York State Capitol;
or, you can also make a donation to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society to help pay for Oliver's medical bills.
